WASHINGTON.

1.     Washington is the capital of the USA. The population of Washington is about 756000 and together with suburbs its population is over 2800000.

2.     The city belongs neither to the north nor to the South. Washington is humid year round because it sits between two rivers, the Potomac and Anacostia. Washington’s winters are not severe, the city shares the sweaty summers of Lousiana and the windy cold of the Northwest.

3.     Washington is like no other city of the USA. New york is a centre of finance, of shipping, of fun; New  Orlean deals in cotton; Chicago will sell you wheat and a hundred heads of cattles. But Washington’s only industry is government. The White House, where the U.S. President lives and works, the Capitol, tht home of the U.S. Congress, and the Supreme Court are all in Washington. The Library of Congress, the biggest existing library, contains more than 13 million books in various languages.

4.     There are many places of interest in Washington. One of them is the Thomas Jefferson memorial. This is a memorial to the third President of the United States, the Founder of the Democratic Party.

5.     No visit to Washington is complete without an excursion to the home of George Washington at Mount Vernon. The estate, a typical 18th century plantation home, is on the Potomac River, 15 miles south of the capital.

6.     Washington is a constant scene of mass demonstrations, “ hunger marches” and antiwar rallies.

THE EMERGENCE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

1.     In preindustrial America, firms were typically very small and owner – managers had daily personal contact with their employees, supervising as they worked alongside them. Manufacturing establishments were craft shops in which the owners directly supervised journeymen and apprentices.

2.     Gradually, as entrepreneurs  increased  in number and it became socially acceptable for individuals to pursue their economic self – interest, a social environment evolved in which the energies of individuals were directed by raising or lowering the rewards offered for various tasks.

3.     A market – oriented society began to emerge. Competition appeared, marking it tougher for any one firm to gain a strategic position for its own advantage. Likewise, buyers were restrained from forcing prices below the costs of production, for other eager buyers would guickly outbid them. The market became a contest wherein buyers sought to pay as little as possible for commodities and sellers sought to extract as high a price as buyers would pay.

4.     As late as the 1870s, the major business enterprises were engaged in servicing an agrarian economy. Except for a few companies supplying the needs of the rapidly expanding railroad enterprises, the  leading firms processed agricultural products and provided farmers with food and clothing.

5.     These firms were generally small by today’s standards – even though they utilized what then were mass production technologies. They bought their raw materials locally and for the most part they sold their finished goods locally. Where they manufactured for a market more than a few miles away, they distributed their goods through commissioned agents or jobbers who handled the business of several other similar firms.
